Summary

The Conference of the Parties (COP) is the governing body of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), an international treaty adopted at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992.

Its objective is to establish agendas, commitments and frameworks for action to conserve biological diversity and put it to sustainable use, as well as to ensure the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the utilization of genetic resources.

The COP is held every two years. In 2024, for the first time in history, Colombia will host the 16th edition of the biannual Conference on Biodiversity. Each of these conferences seeks to take decisive measures for the protection of biological diversity.

This year, COP16 will take place in Cali, capital of the department of Valle del Cauca (Colombia), between October 21 and November 1, 2024.

The slogan “Peace with Nature” is a call for reflection to improve the relationship we have with the environment, to rethink an economic model that does not prioritize the extraction, overexploitation and pollution of nature.

La Conferencia de las Partes (COP) es el órgano rector del Convenio sobre la Diversidad Biológica (CDB), un tratado internacional adoptado en la Cumbre de la Tierra de Río de Janeiro en 1992.

Su objetivo es establecer agendas, compromisos y marcos de acción para conservar la diversidad biológica y darle un uso sostenible, así como garantizar la participación justa y equitativa de los beneficios derivados de la utilización de los recursos genéticos.

La COP se celebra cada dos años. En 2024, por primera vez en la historia, Colombia hospedará la edición 16 de la Conferencia bianual sobre Biodiversidad. En cada una de estas Conferencias se busca tomar medidas determinantes para la protección de la diversidad biológica.

Este año, la COP16 tendrá lugar en Cali, capital del departamento del Valle del Cauca (Colombia), entre el 21 de octubre y el 1 de noviembre del 2024.

El lema “Paz con la Naturaleza” es un llamado a la reflexión para mejorar la relación que tenemos con el ambiente, repensar un modelo de económico que no priorice la extracción, sobreexplotación y contaminación de la naturaleza.
