The effects of a tsunami are devastating. They are one of the world's worst natural disasters that can hit a country. The effects of tsunami may range from destruction and damage, death, injury, millions of dollars in financial loss, and long lasting psychological problems for the inhabitants of the region.

To save life and property, the Caribbean Tsunami Information Centre (CTIC), a partnership initiative between the Government of Barbados and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (UNESCO/IOC), and supported by UNDP Barbados and the OECS, serves as an information resource from which government agencies, public and private stakeholders, partners and the general public can draw to implement tsunami and other coastal hazards safety measures.

The United Nations has proclaimed a Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) to support efforts to reverse the cycle of decline in ocean health and gather ocean stakeholders worldwide behind a common framework that will ensure ocean science can fully support countries in creating improved conditions for sustainable development of the Ocean.
